The glory went to the joust, but the guts went to the Grand Melee.
During Medieval Tournaments, the assembled company of participants would close the games with the Grand Melee, a full fledge war on the field. The fighters of the Armored Combat League returning us to those bruising days of yesteryear in their competitions. Lest you think these are the flawlessly choreographed re enactments designed for entertainment, it is not. The knights of the ACL are trained, professional athletes with real armor and real weapons. The weapons are blunted, and their are rules, but the combat is as close as one can get to the Grand Melee without dead men dotting the field. I witnessed their tryouts at the Fort Tryon Medieval Festival in 2013.
