During my younger days, I was fortunate enough to take part in the Military Working Dog program, where I learned to handle police dogs. This remains the only part about being the military I miss. It also set the tone for how I think about dogs, as a rule they should be large, trained and useful. (This doesn’t mean I didn’t love all the dogs I was assigned.) It does keep me out of the “small dog camp”, they just aren’t for me. (It’s not a “macho” thing, I have cats which want no part of any human male posturing.) So, if I ever find myself with another dog I am going to need a much larger backpack to carry my dog around in.
