They say everyone has at least one great story in them…my friend Jenny has hundreds of them. She performed last night at Word Up a community owned and operated bookstore in Washington Heights. I also dabble in writing and a little performance poetry, and I speak from experience when I say it takes guts to stand up and tell your stories to strangers. Photography, comparatively, is easy: you are completely anonymous behind the camera.
Still, everyone should, at least once in their life, stand up and tell their one great story. It doesn’t have to be anything earthshaking, it should be about something you are passionate about. If you care about it, then you can make others care as well. You don’t have to be a writer, or a comedian, or an artist, just be the person you are. The story will flow naturally.
Also, you should definitely support Word Up, bringing great things to Upper Manhattan! When they say it is a “community” bookstore, that is exactly what they mean. Staffed by volunteers all of whom striving to bring the literary culture of New York City to the parts of the City the glitterati don’t even know exists.
